NEUROMUSCULAR BLOCKING DRUGS Flashcards
1
Q
Two types of NMBDs
A
Depolarizing
Nondepolorizing
2
Q
NMBDs function
A
Prevent nerve transmission in certain muscles, resulting in muscle paralysis
-Paralyze respiratory and skeletal muscles
3
Q
Depolarizing NMBD
A
Succinylcholine
4
Q
Nonpolarizing NMBDs
A
Vecuronium
5
Q
Anesthetics and NMBDs priority nursing implications
A
Airway
Vitals (respiratory depression and cardiac depression)
Malignant hyperthermia
Electrolytes
6
Q
Depolarizing NMDs
A
First sensation in muscle weakness
Followed by total flaccid paralysis
Small, rapidly moving muscles affected first (fingers, eyes), then limbs, neck, trunk
Finally, intercostal muscles and diaphragm affected resulting in cessation of respirations
