ANESTHETICS Flashcards
Two types of anesthetics
General
Local
Anesthetics function
Drugs that depress the central nervous system (CNS)
General anesthetics function
Drugs that induce a state in which the CNS is altered to produce varying degrees of
-Pain relief
-Depression of consciousness
Skeletal muscle relaxation
-Reflex reduction
Three types of general anesthetics
Inhaled
Parenteral
Adjunct
Parenteral anesthetics
Propofol
Parenteral anesthetics contradictions
pregnancy and history of Malignant hyperthermia
Malignant hyperthermia
Severe reaction to general anesthesia (inherited)
Rapid rise in body temp, high HR and resp, muscle rigidity
Dantrolene (Dantrium)- treatment
Local anesthetics (regional anesthetics) function
Interfere with nerve impulse transmission to specific areas of the body
Do not cause loss of consciousness (keep giving if you want patient to continue sleeping)
Central local anesthetics
Lidocaine (Xylocaine)
Peripheral Local anesthetics
Lidocaine (lidoderm)
