Leukotriene receptor antagonists function
-Prophylaxis and chronic treatment of asthma in adults and children older than age 12
-NOT meant for management of acute asthmatic attacks
-Montelukast is approved for use in children as young as 12 months and for treatment of allergic rhinitis
Leukotriene receptor antagonist drug effects
-By blocking leukotrienes
-Prevents smooth muscle contraction of the bronchial airways
-Decrease mucus secretion
-Prevent vascular permeability
-Decrease neutrophil and leukocyte infiltration to the lungs, preventing inflammation
Leukotriene receptor antagonist adverse effects
-Zileuton
-Headache, dyspepsia, nausea, dizziness, insomnia, liver dysfunction
-Zafirlukast
-Headache, nausea, diarrhea, liver dysfunction
-Montelukast has fewer adverse effects (this is why it’s the key drug)
-Depression, suicidal ideation
Leukotriene receptor antagonists priority nursing implications
-Oral pill so take daily
-Not for acute asthma
-Monitor mental status
-Longer half-life (takes long to kick in), so keep taking it
