Traditional AEDs
Phen0barbital (Luminal)
Carbamazepine (Tegretol)
Valproic (Depakene)
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Phenytoin (Dilantin)
Long-term therapy may cause:
Gingival hyperplasia (advise good oral care)
Acne
Hirsutism
Newer AEDs (better tolerated)
Gabapentin
AEDs priority nursing implications
Take them once daily for the rest of your life
Good oral care specifically for phenytoin
Should not be discontinued abruptly
