What is benign essential tremor?
Fine tremor affecting all voluntary muscles, espeically the hands
Common condition associated with older age
Can also affect areas like the head, jaw and vocal cords
What are the key features of benign essential tremor?
- Fine tremor (6-12 Hz)
- Symmetrical
- More prominent with voluntary movement
- Worse when tired, stressed, or after caffeine
- Improved by alcohol
- Absent during sleep
These features help in diagnosing the condition.
What is the frequency range of the tremor in benign essential tremor?
6-12 Hz
What are the differential diagnoses for tremor?
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Huntington’s chorea
- Hyperthyroidism
- Fever
