Neurology Flashcards
what are the three major clinical signs of motor unit disease?
reduced reflexes
muscle atrophy
reduced muscle tone
what are the three neuromuscular localisations?
peripheral nerves (neuropathy)
neuromuscular junction
muscle (myopathy)
what gait abnormalities are seen with neuromuscular disease?
reduced stride length
bunny hopping
fatigue
how can a neuropathy be distinguished from other neuromuscular locaisations?
possible sensory deficits (myopathy and junctionopathy will have sensation)
are junctionopathies focal or generalised?
always generalised
what is the differential for acute onset generalised neuropathy?
polyadiculoneuritis
what are the differentials for acute onset generalised junctionopathy?
myasthenia gravis
botulism
organophosphate toxicity
what are the differentials for acute onset generalised myopathy?
polymyositis (immune mediated/infectious)
electrolyte abnormalities - hypokalaemia, Addisons…
what initial diagnostic tests are run for suspected neuromuscular disease?
haematology
biochemistry - electrolytes, glucose, creatine kinase, cholesterol
urinalysis (myoglobinuria)
