Cardiology. Flashcards
what is the most common heart disease of dogs?
myxomatous degenerative valve disease
what causes myxomatous degenerative valve disease?
idiopathic (degenerate)
what size dogs is myxomatous degenerative valve disease usually seen in?
small breeds
what size dogs is mutual valve dysplasia seen in?
large breed
what is the pathophysiology associated with myxomatous degenerative valve disease?
nodular thickening of the valve leaflets due to collagen deposition causing them to leak
the chordae become stretched and can rupture worsening the leakage
what breed is predisposed to myxomatous degenerative valve disease?
caviller King Charles spaniel
what are the gross pathological changes seen with myxomatous degenerative valve disease?
LA/LV dilation
elongated chordae teninae
thickened leaflets
jet lesions
what is the stroke volume?
amount of blood exiting the heart each cycle
what does volume overload of a heart chamber cause?
eccentric hypertrophy
what does pressure overload of a heart chamber cause?
concentric hypertrophy (pushing harder to the muscle hypertrophies)
