neuroimaging reading Flashcards
covert consciousness
hidden awareness
what has led to more people surviving serious brain damage
improvements in trauma care, roadside medicine, and intensive care
disorders of consciousness
conditions in which consciousness is compromised
brain death
all functions of brain and brain stem permanently cease
are disorders of consciousness reversible?
yes, except brain death
Coma
usually temporary; loss of consciousness is complete, wake-sleep cycles disappear, eyes remain closed
vegetative state
sleep-wake cycles occur, eyes can open spontaneously or in response to stimulus; only behaviors displayed tend to be reflexive.
minimally conscious state
patient may seem vegetative, but sometimes show signs of awareness, like responding somehow to their environment
locked-in syndrome
technically not a disorder of consciousness, since patient is conscious, but they cannot move. Many patients retain ability to blink and move eyes.
