Neuroanatomy: Sensory Systems Flashcards
What are the differences between somatic and visceral sensations
Somatic is sensory info that you are aware of, such as gross touch, pain, temperature, fine touch, proprioception, and vibration. Visceral is sensory infor from the hollow organs
Why is a DRG neuron important
Its where the primary sensory neurons reside, and where sensory info from periphery is relayed
How many neurons does it take to relay gross touch, pain, and temperature to the primary sensory cortex
3 neuron chain; neuron 1 =Drg primary sensory neurons, neuron 2=dorsal horn neuron, neuron 3=thalamic neuron
Where are these neurons located
Dorsal root ganglia, dorsal horn, and thalamus
the axon of which neuron crosses the midline
The second neuron in dorsal horn
where does this axon cross the midline
In dorsal horn, through ventral white commisure to ALS
where does this axon travel as it ascends towards the brain
Travels through Anterolateral system (als)
How many neutrons does it take to relay fine touch and proprioception to the primary sensory cortex
3
Where are these neurons located
Drg. Medulla oblongata, and thalamic neuron
The axon of which neuron crosses the midline
2nd neuron crosses in medulla oblongata
Where does the axon travel as it goes to brain
From drg to medulla, it travels in dorsal column. From medulla to thalamus it travels thru medial lemniscus
