Neuroanatomy: Meninges Flashcards
Meninges
Coverings that surround the entire CNS
Meninges Main Functions
Protect, Support vascular elements, and enclose the subarachnoid space
3 layers of Meninges
Dura Mater, Arachnoid Mater, (subarachnoid space), and Pia Mater
Dura Mater
Outermost layer, very sturdy and won’t tear for support. Specializations include Falx cerebri, Falx cerebelli, Tentorium Cerebelli, and dural (venous) sinuses
Dural Sinus
include superior sagittal sinus, inferior sagittal sinus, straight sinus, and confluens, and transverse sinus; they are venous channels that receive blood from the cerebral veins and cerebrospinal fluid from the subarachnoid space
Arachnoid Mater
Middle layer of meninges, spiderweb-like appearance, encloses the subarachnoid space, provides pathway and support for incoming arteries and outgoing veins (blood vessels are suspended in this layer), includes arachnoid granulations
Pia Mater
Innermost layer, very thin (2-3 cell layers), directly adherent to the surface of the brain
