Neuro Pathologies (ms) Flashcards
What is MS
A chronic demyelination disease of the central nervous system characterised by an inflammatory process and widespread degeneration of the central nervous system resulting in severe neurological deficit
Some triggers of ms
Causes aren’t definite, triggers may include; pregnancy, infection, vaccination, trauma, whiplash, emotional stress, generic factors, environmental factors, diet deficiencies
Patho of ms
Disruption of brain blood barrier leakage of inflammatory cells, destruction of ogliodendrocytes and myelin sheaf, signals of conducting nerve slowed down, sclerosis- refers to scarring, multiple- refers to the sites of scarring which can occur in different places
What are the types of ms
Silent/benign
Relapsing
Primary progressive
Secondary progressive
Signs and symptoms of ms
Visual problems, weakness, spasticity, hyperflexia, poor co ordination, parenthesis, sensory loss, poor balance, sphincter dysfunction, decreased intellectual function, fatigue
What’s a ms relapse
An exacerbation of ms, clinical event of the type usually seen in ms
Must last more than 24 hours
Medical treatment of ms
Anti spasticity and relaxants- baclofen, analgesia and anti cholingenic drugs for pain, bladder problems and depression
Outcome measures
EDSS, expanded disability status scale, participation impact of ms on daily life, impact of ms of walking, mswsi2, impairments/activities e.g balance functional reach
Physio treatment for ms
Specific stretches, specific strengthening exercises, balance exercise, gait re education, functional activity practice, pain management, fatigue management, education,
