Nervous System U7 Flashcards
Central Nervous System; Peripheral Nervous System
- Brain and Spinal Cord
- Peripheral Nerves link CNS with receptors and effectors
Dendrites; Cell Body; Axons; Myelin Sheath
conduct nerve impulse towards cell body
replays impulse from dendrite to axon
conduct impulse from cell body
Protective coating of Schwann Cells around larger axon and dendrites
Nodes of Ranvier; Motor end plates; Ganglia
interrupted areas with the myelin sheath (not coated)
impulse chemically transported to muscles/organs
collection of cell body out of CNS
Sensory Neuron; Interneuron; Motor neuron
- Conduct nerve impulse from receptors to CNS
- Relay impulse from SN to motor neuron (makes up brain and spinal cord)
- conduct impulse from CNS to effectors
Stimulus Response Pathway
Stimulus - receptor - (Sensory Neuron( CNS - (Relay neuron) CNS - (Motor Neuron) Effector - response
Resting Potential; Action Potential; Depolarization; Repolarization
- Not firing (-70mV) negative
- Firing (30mV) positive
- Change in membrane polarity while firing
- Restoration of resting potential
Repolarization
Sodium(Na+)Potassium(K+) Pump maintains electrochemical gradient of resting potential
Transmembrane protein uses active transport
expels 3Na+ for every 2K+ emmited
Reflex
Rapid involuntary response to stimulus from simpler pathway (reflex arc)
No brain involved
Reflex Arc
Stimulus initaites receptor - sensory carries to interneuron - Interneuron carries to motor neuron - motor neuron carries to effector
brain finds out later
Spinal Cord
Central canal - cerebrospinal fluid
Grey matter - cell bodies
white matter - long fibers of interneurons
Dorsal (Back) carries info to brain Ventral (front) carries info from brain
Left side of brain controls right side Vice Versa
Medulla Oblongata; Cerebellum
- Brain Stem; pathway brain and spine;
- Butterfly shape; rear lower portion of brain; second largest
Hypothalamus; Thalamus
- Just above the pituitary gland; maintains homeostasis
- Above thalamus; prevents sensory overload; channels info to appropriate place
Cerebrum; Corpus Callosum
- largest part of brain; 2 hemispheres (Left and right); Frontal lobe, Temporal Lobe; Parietal Lobe; Occipital lobe
- Holds hemispheres together; Conducts impulses from one side to the other
Frontal Lobe; Temporal Lobe
- Emotional Control Center; Home for personailty; Reasoning, planing, speech, movement
- Memory; interpreting sound and langauge
Parietal Lobe; Occipital Lobe
- Middle; processing body senses; pressure. touch, pain
- Back of brain; visual info and stimuli
