Nervous System: The Brain Flashcards
Gray Matter
Contains the dendrites and cell bodies
White Matter: definition and what gives it white coloration
Contains axons; myelin sheaths give it color
Cerebral Cortex
Superficial, wrinkled portion (where gyri and sulci are visible!)
Name each lobe and their functions
Parietal: somatosensation, proprioception, and kinesthesia
Frontal: motor functions, personality, short term memory, and consciousness
Occipital: visual perception
Temporal: auditory processing
Corpus Callosum
White matter that connects cerebral hemispheres
Thalamus
Relays and processes information between the cerebral cortex and other structures
Hypothalamus
Regulates homeostasis (controls autonomic nervous system and regulates several endocrine glands)
Epithalamus
Contains the pineal gland and secretes melatonin
Midbrain
Involved in auditory and visual sensation
Pons
Main connection between the cerebellum and the brain stem
Medulla Oblongata
Controls sleep, wakefulness, and general brain activity and attention
Cerebellum
Compares information from cerebrum with sensory information from the PNS
_______ axons enter through the ______ ____ ____
_____ axons leave through the ______ _____ ____
Sensory; dorsal nerve root
Motor; ventral nerve root
Name the 3 layers on the brain from superficial to deep
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, pia mater
What is CSF made of
Filtered blood plasma in ventricles
