Nervous System Overview Flashcards
CNS Location and Components
Inside skull and vertebral column
Components are cerebral hemisphere (cerebrum & diencephalon), brain stem (midbrain, pons, and medulla), cerebellum, and spinal chord
PNS Location and Comonents
Located outside skull and vertebral column
Components are spinal nerves (from spinal chord) and cranial nerves (from brain stem)
Spinal Nerves
Derived from the spinal chord segments:
Cervical Nerves (8, but 7 vertebrae) Thoracic Nerves (12) Lumbar Nerves (5) Sacral Nerves (5, but 1 sacrum) Coccygeal Nerve (1)
Cranial Nerves
12 Cranial Nerves
CN I & II derived from cerebral hemisphere
CN III to X and CN XII derived from Brain Stem
CN XI (Accessory) derived from cervical spinal chord
Ganglia
Collection of nerve cell bodies located outside the CNS
Sensory Ganglia cell body location
Pseudounipolar
Both somatic (body) and visceral (heart, stomach, intestine, etc) sensory
Spinal nerve ganglia (dorsal or posterior root ganglia)
Cranial nerve ganglia (CN V, VII, VIII, IX, X)
Cranial nerves DO NOT have dorsal or ventral root
Autonomic/Motor/Visceral Ganglia cell body location
Multipolar
Sympathetic Ganglia
Parasympathetic Ganglia
Nuclei
Collection of nerve cell bodies IN the CNS
Vestibulocochlear Nerve (CNVIII)
Sensory Ganglion, chochlear, spiral, or vestibular
All ganglion of CNVIII have bipolar cell bodies
Located in Ear
What nerves are associated with sensory functions and where are the cell bodies found?
Sensory ganglion nerve cell bodies associated with spinal and cranial nerves are located in sensory ganglia outside the CNS
Where are autonomic, motor, or visceral ganglia cell bodies found? What type of cells are they?
Autonomic motor nerve cell bodies are located in motor of viscderal ganglia found outside the CNS. They have multipolar cell bodies.
