nervous system organization Flashcards
is efferent motor or sensory
motor
is afferent motor or sensory
sensory
what is the difference btw visceral and somatic
somatic is conscious and voluntary movements whereas visceral is unconscious and unvoluntary
what is the imput receiving portion called
dendrites
what are the three main functions of the nervous system
sensory function, integrative function and motor function
what does sensory function do
detect internal and external stimuli and carries info to the brain via sensory neurons
what does integrative function do
processes sensory info, analyzing and making decisions regarding appropriate responses and this is done by interneurons
what does motor function do
responds to integration decision, neurons that serve this function are motor (efferent) neurons, carry info out of the brain and spinal cord
sensory info goes through what in the spinal cord
exits through the dorsal root
the central nervous system controls which structures
brain and spinal cord (connects the brain to the rest of the body)
the peripheral nervous system controls divides into what 2 subdivisions
the autonomic division and the somatic division
what does the autonomic division regulate
it regulates the internal environment and so it carries the info from the CNS to organs, blood vessels and glands
what does the somatic division regulate
carries info to the CNS from the senses and from theCNS to the skeletal muscles (only these and nothing else)
the autonomic division splits into what 2 subdivisions
sympathetic (arouses the body) and parasympathetic (calms after arousal)
what system includes the brain and spinal cord and is the control center for the entire ns
central nervous system
