Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What nerve is CNI
Olfactory nerve
What is the function of CNI
Sensory : smell
Also induces visceral responses via the ANS (ex: smell something good, salivate and hungry now)
What are the 2 parts of the olfactiry nerve?
Oflactory bulb and tract
What nerve is CNII
Optic nerve
What is the function of CNII
Sense: vision (somatic afferent)
What is the optic nerve formed by
retina ganglion axons that cover the optic disc at the back of the eye
how is CNII unique?
its surrounded by cranial meninges and subarachnoid space filled with CSF
T\fF:the optic nerve goes from the optic chiasma to the thalamus by way of optic tracts
true
T/F: all fibers terminate in the thalamus
false: some terminate in the thalamus, others in the superior colliculi of the corpora quadragememina before travelling to the occipital lobe
which lobe contains the visual cortex
occipital lobe
do all fibore cross at the optic chiasma?
no, only the medial nerve crosses
what is CNIII
occulomotor nerve
what is the function of CNIII
mainly motor
direct innervation of eye m. and huge role in proprioception
what m. does CNIII innervate
sup, inf, and medial rectus inf oblique m. levator palpabrae m. ciliary bodies of the lens iris (pupil size) reflex somatic adjustment (proprioception)
how does CNIII reach the eye
through the superior orbital fissure and then divides into sup and inf divisions
what does the inf division of CIII carry?
presynaptic autonomic fibers to the ciliary ganglion
what nerve is CNIV
trochlear nerve
What is the function of CNIV
mainly motor, superior oblique m.
where does CNIV originate
superiolateral aspect of the pons (posteriorly)
What bone structure does CNIV pass through
superior orbital fissure
what does an injury to CNIV cause
inhibits the eyeball from turning out and down
double vision
whats special about CNIV
its the only nerve that originates dorsally from the brainstem
what nerve is CNV
trigeminal nerve
