Nervous System Flashcards
Name the four effectors.
Skeletal Muscle
Smooth Muscle
Cardiac Muscle
Glands
What is the difference between the nervous system and the endocrine system?
Nervous system
Quick to respond but the changes are short lived.
Voltage regulated
Endocrine system
Slow to respond but changes last long
Chemically (hormone) regulated
Both work together
What body parts does the CNS contain?
Brain and the spinal cord
3 Basic Functions of Nervous System
- Sensory Function - Gathering info
- Integration Center - processing center - (CNS)
- Motor - Response from gathering info
Difference between the Central Nervous system and the peripheral nervous system?
CNS is for integration and PNS is for sensory/motor
What nerves are in the Peripheral Nervous system (PNS)
Cranial Nerves (12 pairs)
Spinal Nerves (31 pairs) - mixed nerves
- 8 cervical (C1-C8)
- 12 thoracic (T1-T12)
- 5 lumbar (L1-L5)
- 5 Sacral (S1-S5)
- 1 coccyx (C0)
Afferent vs. Efferent
Afferent is sensory (delivers information to the CNS)
Efferent is motor (delivers information from CNS to an effector)
What effector make up the somatic/autonomic nervous systems?
Somatic is voluntary, which is skeletal Muscle
Autonomic is involuntary, which contains
Cardiac and smooth muscle as well as glands
Sympathetic/parasympathetic; what is the purpose and what do they do?
Sympathetic (fight or flight) increases HR and respiration and decreases digestion and diuresis
Parasympathetic (rest/repair) lowers HR/respiration, increases digestion and diuresis
