Nervous System Flashcards
What are the functions of the nervous system? What system shares these functions?
Communication, control, coordination
The endocrine system
What is a large difference between the nervous system and the endocrine system?
The nervous system is a hardwired system, it is complicated because of the wiring diagrams
What are the two kinds of cells in the nervous system?
Neurons, neuroglia
What is a unique feature of neurons and some difference between neurons and neuroglia?
Neurons can generate in electrical impulse
Are non-itotic after second year of life
Neuroglia are connective tissues for the nervous system, they cannot generate impulses
What are the tissues of the nervous system?
What are the organs of the CNS and PNS?
CNS: Brain and spinal cord
PNS: Nerves and Ganglia
How would you describe the organ system of the nervous system?
Unified anatomically
All parts are same tissue and physically connected
What is the anatomical organization of the nervous system?
CNS and PNS
Sensory and motor
Somatic and autonomic
S and PS
What is the functional organization of the nervous system?
Information flow: receptor, sensory, integrator, motor, effector
Anatomical organization of nervous system
CNS: part that is housed in the bone; brain and spinal cord.
PNS: includes all nerves which radiate from the CNS and ganglia (sensory and autonomic).
What are the two divisions of the PNS?
Sensory-(afferent) special in general: somatosensory and visceral
Motor-(efferent)
Afferent vs Efferent
Afferent is used to describe things like nerves, blood vessels, and arteries that lead toward or bring things (like blood, in the case of arteries) to an organ, such as the heart or brain. Efferent means the opposite—it’s used to describe parts that carry or lead things away from organs or other parts. Think of the e in efferent as standing for exit
