Cell Flashcards
Function of a plasma membrane
Forms of boundary around the perimeter of each cell
Selective permeability via transport mechanisms
Anchor- cytoskeleton and functional proteins
Communication-receptor proteins recognize hormones
Structure: phospholic bilayer plus proteins
What are the organelles we study in class?
Nucleus
Nucleolus – site of RNA synthesis
Ribosome-free and bound, protein synthesis
Endoplasmic reticulum- rough (protein synthesis) smooth (fat, steroid synthesis)
Golgi complex- receives proteins from ER, packages delivers to lysosomes or plasma membrane for release
Mitochondria- sight of cellular respiration
What are the four types of cell junctions?
Tight junctions- fluid tight seal
Adhering junctions- forms completely around cell deep into tight junctions
Desmosomes- spot welding between two cells, provides resistance to mechanical stress
Gap junctions- allows rapid communication between cells (heart, smooth muscle, CNS)
