Nervous system Flashcards
Primary functions of the nervous systems
Sensing the world
Transmitting information
Processing information
Producing a response
Divisions of the nervous system
A. Central Nervous System (CINS)
B. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
What is contained in the Motor division?
The somatic nervous system (voluntary)
The Autonomic nervous system (ANS) (involuntary)
What reaction occurs due to the sympathetic nervous system?
“Fight or Flight“
Heart beats increases
Accelerates respiratory rate
Pupil dilates
Inhibits urination and digestion
What reaction occurs due to the parasympathetic nervous system?
“Rest and digest “
Heart beats decreases
Respiratory rate decreases
Increase urination
Constrict pupils
What is a neuron?
Neurons are the oldest and longest cells in the human body.
Neurons cannot divide via mitosis but current research suggests that adults can produce new neurons in their brains from neural stem cells.
Anatomy of a neuron
Cell body
Axons
Dendrites
Myelin sheath
Schwann cells
Nodes of Ranvier
Types of neurons
Sensory neurons
Interneurons
Motor neurons
Reflex arc
The skeletal reflex arc coordinates rapid and involuntary muscle responses through sensory neurons, spinal cord interneurons, and motor neurons.
