Nerves Flashcards
What are the two parts of the autonomic nervous system?
Sympathetic and Parasympatheic
What are some actions of the sympathetic nervous system?
Fight or flight: innervates organs causing general increase in heart rate, respiration, decrease in salivary flow. Also shuts down to stomach and extremities (cold and clammy - pupils dilate)
What does the term Reflex Arc mean?
Short cut for messages to the brain. Sensory input to spinal cord and motor response out.
What is the difference between response to sensory and motor neurons?
Sensory = feel pain, touch, proprioception Motor = response to the pain, voluntary control of muscles
Which nervous system are the cranial nerves a part of?
PNS
Stimulation to which nervous system will cause an increase in salivary flow?
Parasympathetic
Stimulation to which nervous system will cause a decrease in salivary flow?
Sympathetic
What is the name of cranial nerve V? What is the name of its ganglion?
Trigeminal nerve
- trigeminal ganglion / semilunar or gasserion
What are the 3 divisions of the V cranial nerve?
V1 – Opthalmic
V2- Maxillary
V3- Mandibular
Through what structure do the following fibers exit the skull?
V1 – Superior orbital fissure
V2 – F. Rotundum
V3 – F. Ovale
Is V1 motor or sensory?
Is V2 motor or sensory?
Is V3 motor or sensory?
Sensory
Sensory
Both Motor and Sensory
Which division of V innervates the muscles of mastication?
V3 - mandibular
Which nerve supplies innervation to the muscles of facial expression?
VII - facial
Which cranial nerve supplies the submandibular and sublingual gland?
VII - chorda tympani
Which cranial nerve supplies the parotid gland?
IX- glossopharyngeal
The lingual nerve is joined by a branch of the seventh cranial nerve (facial nerve) called what?
What does this branch supply?
Called the chorda tympani
Supplies afferent - taste to/from anterior 2/3 of tongue
Sympathetic & parasympathetic - efferent to submand and sublingual salivary glands
Which nerve carries fibers to the minor salivary glands on the soft palate?
VII- greater petrosal (of facial) secretory (ANS)
What soft tissues of the head and neck are supplied by the branches of the glossopharyngeal nerve?
IX - posterior 1/3 of tongue (taste, and few taste buds of the pharynx area)
Parasympathetic secretory to parotid gland
Motor - pharyngeal area and muscles
Sensory - pharynx and posterior 1/3 of tongue
What 3 cranial nerves make up the Pharyngeal plexus?
IX- glossopharyngeal
X- vagus
XI- accessory
