Blood Supply / Vessels Flashcards
What is the difference between an artery and a vein?
Artery- Carries oxygenated blood to tissues from heart
Veins – carries deoxygenated blood from tissues to heart - lungs
What is the location of the common carotid artery?
Deep to the SCM muscle at lateral aspect of neck
Branches at level of larynx into internal and external carotid arteries
What area does the internal carotid artery supply?
Brain, meninges, deep facial / ophthalmic region
The facial, lingual and maxillary arteries are branches of which artery?
External Carotid
What areas does the facial artery supply?
Submandibular gland, submental area – skin of face, lips to eye (angular artery ends here). Also to muscles of facial expression except buccinators. Also ascending palatine branch which is small branch to palatine region / soft palate and muscles.
Which artery supplies blood to the following? (name the terminal branch and the main artery the terminal branch comes off of)
Posterior scalp – occipital – external carotid
Maxillary molar teeth – PSA – maxillary – external c.
Mandibular molar teeth – inferior alveolar – maxillary – external c.
Anterior hard palate – nasopalatine– sphenopalatine– maxillary – external c
Submandibular salivary gland – facial – external carotid
Tongue and tissue in the floor of the mouth – lingual – external carotid & some anastomoses with mylohyoid and lingual A (FOM)
What areas does the maxillary artery supply?
Meninges, muscles of mastication, buccinator, cheeks, max and mand teeth and periodontium, nasal tissues, sinuses, palate (ant and post of hard and soft)
Which branch of the common carotid artery has branches of most concern in dentistry?
External
Name the foramen by which the following arteries enter or exit the skull.
Middle meningeal - F. spinosum
Inferior alveolar - Mandibular
Internal carotid – Carotid Canal
Descending palatine – Pterygopalatine canal (greater and lesser palatine foramen onto palate)
Which artery has branches that supply the muscles of mastication?
Branches of the Maxillary artery – External Carotid Artery
Which artery does the angular artery branch from?
The facial – External Carotid
When referring to veins, what are the counterparts to the internal and external carotid arteries?
Internal and External jugular veins
