Lymphatics Flashcards
What lymph nodes drain the teeth max and mand?
Submandibular: all max teeth except 8s. Mand canines, premolars and molars.
Sub mental: mand incisors
Upper deep cervical: max and post mand 8s
What is lymph?
Fluid within lymph system - nodes and vessels, a clear watery fluid from plasma: contains proteins, electrolytes, lymphocytes (WBCs)
Where are the cervical lymph nodes situated?
Ant and post, superficial and deep to the SCM muscle.
External jugular are also considered the superficial cervical (lateral to and slight post to SCM)
Anterior jugular also considered superficial cervical, are at the base area of SCM (inferior)
Deep cervical are deep to the SCM structure (inferior and superior) deep to SCM at level of hyoid (estimate) and at base of the structure
When talking about spread of infection via lymphatics, what do primary, secondary and tertiary mean?
Primary: first group of nodes involved in pathology
Secondary: second group of nodes along pathway
Tertiary: third group, each group is closer to venous return system
An abscess of a mandibular incisor will likely drain into which node group?
What would the secondary and tertiary groups be?
Submental
To submandibular and / or to upper (superior) deep cervical
When palpating lymph nodes what would a normal lymph node feel like?
Abnormal?
Soft, mobile - would not normally be able to palpate
Enlarged, firm, mobile or non; may be rubbery or harder. May be tender or not.
You have identified a mobile,
Non tender rubbery node in the superficial cervical chain, do you have any questions you might ask the client? What would follow up tx be?
Have you noticed any lumps or bumps within your tissues? Do you currently have it have you had any cold, infection, toothache, etc?
Self monitor mode- if it is still prevalent in 2+ weeks perhaps have a physician check it or have it check out on your next medical visit
Explain symptoms of lymphadenitis
Fever, tenderness, swollen nodes
It is an inflammatory state.
