- Neisseria meningitis attach to the cell by outer membrane proteins and pili
- multiply in the cytoplasm and escape to submucosa
- meningococal capsule allows it to evade phagocytosis and enters the bloodstream and then meninges
- after CNS invasion, an intense subarachnoid space inflammatory response
