pathogenesis

A
  1. ingestion of Shiga toxin-producing E coli
  2. Shiga toxin cause mucosal injury of intestinal cells, which results in bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain
  3. toxin translocate from gut to circulation, then to kidney
  4. at kidney, microvasculature–> thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet, hemolysis, renal failure, hemolysis)–>HUS

supportive (severe diarrhea +/- blood transfusion)
