pathogenesis
A
- ingestion of Shiga toxin-producing E coli
- Shiga toxin cause mucosal injury of intestinal cells, which results in bloody diarrhea and abdominal pain
- toxin translocate from gut to circulation, then to kidney
- at kidney, microvasculature–> thrombocytopenia (low blood platelet, hemolysis, renal failure, hemolysis)–>HUS

treatment
A
supportive (severe diarrhea +/- blood transfusion)
