Nature of Cancer & Oncogenes Flashcards
Primary vs Metastasis?
Primary:
Localised to orginating organ
Metastatic (secondary):
Colonisation in distant organs but derived from cells of primary tumour
Benign Tumours
Local without invading adjacent tissues
Malignant Tumours
Invading adjacent tissues or seeded metastases
Most common type of tissue for tumours?
Epithelial tissues-
SCC from epithelia that protect underlying tissue
Adenocarcinoma from mucus secreting epithelia
Tumour morphology progression sequence
Normal Hyperplastic Metaplastic Dysplastic Neoplasm Malignant Neoplasm
What are proto-oncogenes
Normal genes that can become oncogenes due to mutation or altred expression
Pathways to oncogene generation
Viral transcriptional promoters can drive very high levels of expression (Myc)
Single base pair (point) mutation (H-ras)
