nature nurture DONT DO Flashcards
what is the debate for nature nurture
is our behaviour the result of our environment or inheritance
how does the nature nurture debate impact psychology
it is difficult to establish where our behaviour comes from or is it both nature and nurture, so either interactionist approach or diathesis stress model
define nature and define nurture
nature- behaviour is a product of innate drives and biological influences, nativist believe all behaviour is innate including psychological behaviour such as personality
nurture- behaviour as a product of my environment through classical conditioning and operant conditioning, behaviourist believe mine is a blank slate and there are different levels to our environment such as parental influence and peers, the physical influences and social conditions
how do we form attachments for nature nurture
nature- we form attachment because we need to in order to survive, Bowlby, mothers want a child and produce the hormones and babies have social releases such as looking cute, mother has internal working model
nurture- form attachment through classical conditioning and operant conditioning because of pleasure through getting food
heredity meaning
genetic characteristics transmitted from mental (eg schizophrenia) / physical (eg diabetes) genes from one generation to another
interactionist approach
how nature and nurture influence each other and we cannot separate them as it makes no sense to, nature nature factors combined to explain behaviour that is predictable
interactionist approach for nature and interaction approach for nurture
nature, attachment is innate and internal working model
nurture, food
Diathesis stress model
genes create a vulnerability and stressors in environment triggers their behaviours, e.g. OCD genetic from family and the trigger could be a traumatic event
Epigenetic
change in genetic activity without changing the gene it self, it happens through life and caused by the interaction with the environment e.g. diabetes
