holism and reductionism DONT DO Flashcards
debate for holism and reductionism
whether behaviour is a result of a whole integrated experience or by breaking it down into smaller constituent parts
holism meanin
looking at human behaviour as a whole integrated experience; looking at individual parts is inappropriate for example the humanistic approach
what did Gesalt say about holism
The whole is greater than the some of its parts
reductionism meaning
Breaking down behaviour into smaller constituent parts, parsimony is a scientific term to state that behaviour should be explained in the simplest way and is the lowest level of explanation
levels of explanation
different ways of explaining the same behaviour, e.g., sociocultural, psychological, physical, physiological, neurochemical (in order of least reductionist to most)
biological reductionism
all behaviour can be explained by biology such as genes hormones and your transmitters so there is some level of biology involved
environmental reductionism
(also known as S-T based on behaviourism), all behaviour is acquired and learn through the environment for example attachment, so the child associate the mother with food and the mother provides food forming pleasure which forms attachment
