Why did the government of Canada want to build a transcontinental railway
- To bring B.C into confederation

Why did they pick the southern route for the railway
- Flat land (cheaper)
- Coal deposits fuels the train
- Close to the border, take instead of American train
- Already owned most of the land
- Immigrants would’ve found better jobs for farming areas
Explain where the southern and northern route took you in the railway
Southern: From Québec through the bottom of Manitoba, Saskatchewan, Alberta and B.C
Northern: Through the bottom of Quebec and Manitoba and gradually moves up through Alberta and Saskatchewan getting to the mountains in B.C
How did the Canadians government negotiate with the First Nations
They promised them farming tools and signed a treaty but never got the stuff to this day
They didn’t even want farming tools they hunted
What were some challenges of building the railway in B.C
people would build in different areas that don’t connect
Build along steep canyons and dark tunnels
Workers died in rock slides, falls and explosions
What challenges did workers face in the prairies building the railway
Workers would lay out 10km day and night
Also built along rivers
Supplies would be brought and placed on newly laid track
What challenges did Northern Ontario face when building the railway
They would work in the mud
Track would fall in the mud
Blast through the rock of the Canadian Shield (rocky area is the Candiac shield)

Why were Chinese workers unprepared for the work they arrived to do
They were unprepared for the harsh winters

How did the immigration act effect people
Asians had about 50% of the population
The rest of the 50% of the population is made of 5 groups of different people
Asian have big families attracting more of them
What does the official languages act guarantee
- Bilingualism in the government

Have to pay 50 dollars= 1300 to immigrate
Increased to 500 dollars = 13 000 to immigrate
