Nasal Physiology Flashcards
What is the function of the nose?
Warm and humidify air, respiration in neonates, smell, drainage of middle ear, drainage of paranasal sinuses and lacrimal duct, acts as an immune barrier
What are the functions of the sinuses ?
Reservoir of warm air, lightens skull, vocal resonance, immune barrier
What is the function of a crumple zone?
Distribute and absorb energy to protect the brain during trauma
What forms the roof of the nose?
Skullbase/Cribiform Plate
What forms the walls of the nose?
Turbinates
What forms the floor of the nose?
The hard palate
What are nasal turbinates ?
Bony scroll like projections from lateral wall of the nose. They warm and humidify air as it travels through the nose
What is the function of the nasolacrimal duct?
Drainage of Tears
Where do the frontal paranasal sinuses drain?
The frontal recess via the middle meatus
Where do the two maxillary paranasal sinuses drain?
The middle meatus via the semilunar hiatus
Where does the sphenoid sinus drain?
The sphenoethmoidal recess
Describe the ethmoid air cells
Anterior and posterior sinuses found between the eyes. Honeycomb like structure
Where does the nasolacrimal duct drain?
The inferior meatus in the lateral nasal wall
What separates the ethmoid sinuses from their orbital content?
The Lamina Papyracea
What is the nasal septum made up of?
The vomer bone, the central plate of ethmoid and the septal plate of cartilage
