Hearing Loss Flashcards
What does a Rinne test evaluate?
Unilateral Hearing Loss and Bone Conduction
What would the results of a Rinne test show if an individual displayed normal hearing?
Air conduction > Bone Conduction
When is bone conduction > air conduction?
Abnormal hearing a.k.a conductive hearing loss
When is both bone and air conduction diminished?
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
Describe conductive hearing loss?
When there is an issue with conducting soundwaves through the outer ear, tympanic membrane or ear ossicles
What can cause conductive hearing loss?
Otitis externa, tumour of ear canal, Tympanosclerosis, perforated eardrum, otitis media
How does one test for conductive hearing loss?
Otoscopy, Rinne’s test, typanometry, audiometry, CT Scan
What is sensorineural hearing loss?
Hearing loss in which the route cause lies in within the inner ear, the cochlea or in CNVIII
When does sensorineural hearing loss occur?
When hair cells of the cochlear are damaged
What can cause sensorineural hearing loss?
Genetics, Diabetes Mellitus, Otitis Interna, Tumours, Menieres Disease, Bacterial Meningitis, Mumps, Measles, stroke, brain injury
What are the tests for Sensorineural Hearing Loss?
Weber test, Rinne Test, Tympanometry, Audiometry, MRI
What are the treatments for Sensorineural Hearing?
Cochlear Implants
