Narcotics (Opioids) - for severe pain only Flashcards
Morphine
Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist - for severe analgesia, mood alteration, antitussive (anti-cough), sedation
Codeine
demethylated into morphone; Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist - for severe analgesia, mood alteration, antitussive (anti-cough), sedation
Tramadol
Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist (weak and some NE/5HT uptake inhibition; synthetic codeine analog - for moderate analgesia (less constipation side effects)
Fentanyl
Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist - for severe analgesia (very strong), long half-life - don’t change dose before a week goes by
Methadone
Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist; very long acting - for chronic severe pain and heroin or opiod addicts
Oxycodone
Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist - for severe pain, very effective but highly abused
Meperidine
(Demerol) Mu-opioid receptor (MOR) agonist, bad active metabolite, don’t use this
Naloxone
Opioid receptors antagonist - for acute opioid toxicity (respiratory failure)
Naltrexone
Mu-opioid receptor antagonist - for alcoholism
