Narcotic Antagonist
What is the MOA of Naloxone?
Naloxone is chemically similar to narcotics, but it only has antagonist properties. Competes for opiate receptors in the brain. Also displaces narcotic molecules from opiate receptors. Can reverse respiratory depression associated with narcotic overdose.
What are the indications for giving Naloxone?
Used for the complete or partial reversal of depression caused by narcotics.
What is the onset time for Naloxone?
<2 minutes IV/IO
2-10 minutes IM/IN
What is the duration time for Naloxone?
Peak: Variable
Total: 30 minutes
What are the contraindications for giving Naloxone?
Hypersensitivity
What are the side effects of Naloxone?
Should be administered cautiously to patients known or suspectedly to be physically dependent on narcotics. Can cause withdrawal-type effects

Narcan

1-2mg IV, IO, IN
Can also be administered via SVM
