What class of medication is Epinephrine?
Sympathomimetic
What is the MOA of Epinephrine?
Binds to Alpha 1 and Beta 2 adrenergic receptor sites causing vasoconstriction, increased HR, and increased force of contraction as well as bronchiolar smooth muscle relaxation
What are the indications for giving Epinephrine?
Cardiac Arrest, severe anaphylaxis, severe reactive airway disease.
(symptomatic bradycardia refractory to Atropine)
What is the onset time for Epinephrine?
Immediate (<2 minutes)
What is the duration time for Epinephrine?
Several minutes
What are the contraindications for giving Epinephrine?
use with caution if patient has cardiovascular disease or hypotension
Epi 1:10000 in patients who don’t require CPR
What are the side effects of Epinephrine?
Palpitations, tachycardia, anxiety, nausea, vomiting
May cause chest pain, or myocardial ischemia
What dose of Epinephrine is given?
Anaphylaxis: 0.3-0.5mg of Epi 1:1000 (repeat by protocol)
Cardiac Arrest: 1mg of Epi 1:10,000 IV every 3-5 minutes
By which route is Epinephrine given?
Anaphylaxis: IM
Cardiac Arrest: IV or IO
