What class of medication is Morphine Sulfate?
Opioid Analgesic
What is the MOA of Morphine Sulfate?
Sulfate is a CNS depressant that acts on opiate receptors in the brain, providing both analgesia and sedation. Increases peripheral venous capacitance and decreases venous return. Morphine decreases myocardial O2 demand. This is due to both the decreased systematic vascular resistance and the sedative effects of the medication.
What is the onset time for Morphine Sulfate?
Immediate IV
What is the duration time for Morphine Sulfate?
Peak: 20 minutes
Total: 3-6 hours
What are the indications for giving Morphine Sulfate?
Severe pain associated with MI, kidney stones, etc. Use in pulmonary edema and CHF has been limited in favor for more vasoactive agents
What are the contraindications for giving Morphine Sulfate?
Volume depleted, severely hypotension, history of hypersensitivity, undiagnosed head injury
What are the side effects of Morphine Sulfate?
nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, blurred vision, constricted pupils, altered mental status, headache, respiratory depression
What is the dose of Morphine Sulfate given?
2-10mg at 5-15 minute intervals
