N40-N43 Flashcards
LMN lesion
hyporeflexia, flaccid, hypotonia, fasciculations, fibrillations, profound severe atrophy,
UMN lesion
hypereflexia, hypertonicity, spastic, clonus, babinksi sign (+), muscle weakness, disuse atrophy
Lesion of MI superior to spinomedullary junction
muscle weakness (PARESIS) on contralateral side, noticed for distal muscles (fine movements)
PMC lesion
(uncoordinated complex tasks) NO paresis, strength and tone normal; APRAXIC: impaired ability to form complex movement, simple movements intact
Perseveration
tendency to continue certain movement, even though movement is unsuccessful; reflex intact
SMA lesion
(uncoordinated bilaterally) inability to coordinate actions between sides; no weakness
PMA lesion
Apraxia; NO weakness; inability to incorporate sensory into motor (agraphesthesia and astereognosis) = motor disturbances for complex movement
FEF lesion
unilateral lesion = inability to look to contralateral side
Cerebellar lesion
ipsilateral; ataxia, dysmetria (how far away something is), dysdiadochokinesia (rapid movement impairment), tremor during movements, slowed movement and speech
Basal ganglia lesion
akinesia (can’t move), dyskinesia (abnormal movement), either hypertonic or hypotonic,
Parkinsonism
akinesia and HYPERtonia, decreased dopamine; cog-wheel tremors, shuffling
Chorea
dyskinesia and HYPOtonia: lesions to corpus striatum, loss of ACh, irregular, brisk, jerking movements
Tremore-at-rest
dyskinesia and HYPOtonia; tremor present during inactivity
Athetosis
slow, writhing movements of muscles (worm like)
Ballism
lesion to subthalamic nucleus, contralateral side = unwanted jerking movements
