Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) has two subtypes. What are they?

M. avium and M. intracellular

Where is MAC found?
A
Air, food, water, animals

In an HIV+ individual with MAC, what symptoms may we see if their CD4 levels are less than 50?
A
- Diarrhea, fever, night sweats, and abdominal pain
2. Can cause pneumonia (not as common)

Why don’t we see MAC in HIV+ patients as frequently anymore?
A
The effectiveness of HAART treatment - keeping CD4 counts high

How is MAC diagnosed?
A
- Culture
- Acid fast bacilli smear (AFB)
- Chest X-ray (w/ pneumonia cases)

How is MAC treated?
A
With two antibiotics

How may children with MAC present clinically?
A
Enlarged lymph nodes (not common)
