What is Candidiasis caused by?
Candida albicans, a yeast-like fungus
Who is at most risk for contracting Candidiasis
Those of extreme ages are at the highest risk! (immunosuppressed, antibiotic users, dieting and under stress also at risk)
Vaginal candidiasis usually results from?
Antibiotic use
What are a few types of superficial mucocutaneous candidiasis?
- Oral
- Vaginal
- Diaper area
Invasive Candidiasis is usually present in what population?
Immunosuppressed (i.e. AIDS)
Where is Candida albicans typically found?
In the environment, but humans and animals can be a reservoir as well
What species is the most common cause of a fungal infection in the immunocompromised?
Candida
What is the treatment for Candidiasis (mucocutaneous)?
Topical Anti-fungal Agents (for superficial infections)
What is the treatment for systemic Candidiasis?
Parenteral anti-fungals (IV or IM)
Are most infections Mucocutaneous or Systemic?
Mucocutaneous
What is the mortality rate for systemic Candidiasis?
30 to 40%
How do you diagnose Candidiasis?
A test is usually not needed, but you can look for a hyphae or budding yeast. Also can do a blood/urine culture or biopsy
