Q

List the functions of the skeleton and relate to sport

A

Support(keep vital organs in place and hold up muscles)- bicep is attached to arm= bicep curl

Movement- to walk, femur, tibia, fibula are being pulled on by muscles via tendons to move

Mineral storage- bones store calcium so when I play ruby, my bones don’t break as often because I drink milk

Blood cell production- my white blood cells stop me being sick allowing me to play more matches

Protection- flat bones e.g ribs protects my lungs when I get tackled in rugby

Structure and shape- determine height and build so I can be lifted in a line if I’m tall

16
Q

What do long bones do? Give a sporting example of when they are needed

A

Produce gross movement
.large bones for running

17
Q

What type of bone is a vertebrae and what is its job?

A

Irregular
to protect the spinal cord

18
Q

What type of bone is the humerus?

A

long bone

19
Q

What type of bone is the patella?

A

irregular

20
Q

What type of bone is the sternum?

A

flat

21
Q

What is the role of a ligament?

A

To attach bone to bone

22
Q

What are the three main type of joints and where are they found?

A

Fixed joints e.g cranium

Semi-movable joints e.g in spinal column

Synovial joint (freely movable) e.g ankle, knee, hips, shoulder

23
Q

Define synovial joints

A

An area in the body where two or more articulating bones meet. Freely moveable joint.

24
Q

learn synovial joint diagram

A
25
Q

What is the role of the tendon?

A

To attach muscle to bone

26
Q

What movement can occur at ball and socket joints?

A

Circumduction
Extension
Flexion
Abduction
Adduction
Rotation

27
Q

What movement can occur at hinge joints?

A

Plantarflexion
Dorsiflexion
Extension
Flexion

28
Q

Which joints are hinge?

A

.knee
.elbow
.ankle

29
Q

Which joints are ball and socket?

A

.shoulder
.hip

30
Q

Define extension with an example

A

Increasing the angle at a joint

E.g downward motion of a bicep curl

31
Q

Define flexion with an example

A

Decreasing the angle at a joint

Upwards motion of a bicep curl

32
Q

Define abduction with an example

A

Movement of a limb or bone away from midline of the body

E.g taking back a tennis racket before swinging it

33
Q

Define rotation with an example

A

Movement around a long axis

E.g hip in golf while performing a drive shot

34
Q

Define adductionwith an example

A

Movement of limb or bone towards midline of body

E.g swinging a golf club

35
Q

Define plantarflexion with an example

A

Extension at the ankle
E.g pointing toes in trampolining

36
Q

Define dorsiflexion with an example

A

Flexion at the ankle

E.g Raising the toes upward when walking as the foot comes up off the ground to take the next step

37
Q

Define circumduction with an example

A

Movement of a limb in a circular motion

E.g Bowling an overarm ball in cricket
