Musculoskeletal System Flashcards
Filament
Long chain of proteins
Muscle
A band or bundle of fibrous tissue in the human body that has the ability to contract
Myofibril
A threadlike structure found in the cytoplasm of muscle fibres
Sarcolemma
A thin, transparent membrane surrounding a muscle cell
Sarcomere
Sections of myofibrils, consists of actin and myosin filaments
Chondrocyte
A cell that forms the fibres and matrix of cartilage
Collagen fibres
Extracellular proteins occurring as the major component of connective tissue
Elastic fibres
A yellowish fibre composed chiefly of elastin and occurring in networks or sheets which give elasticity to tissues in the body
Joint
- Adjacent bones are joined by ligaments and other fibrous tissue.
- Determines movement
Ligament
The fibrous connective tissue that connects bones together
Macroscopic
Visible to the naked eye
Microscopic
To small to be seen by the naked eye
Tendon
Fibrous tissue that connects muscle to bone
Types of muscle
- Cardiac
- Smooth
- Skeletal
Cardiac Muscle
- Walls of the heart
- Involuntary movement
- Contracts for the pumping action of the heart to move blood through arteries
Smooth Muscle
- Walls of internal organs
- Involuntary
- Allows for movement of contents through the tracts
Skeletal Muscle
- Attached to bones
- Voluntary
- Contraction brings about movement of bones
Sarcoplasm
Cytoplasm of the muscle cell
Muscle fibre
Cylindrical shaped muscle cell
Myofilament
- Tiny protein units involved in muscle contraction.
- Gives muscle cells there branded appearance
Myosin
Thick myofilament - protein
Actin
Thin myofilament - protein
