The lymphatic system consists of:

- A fluid known as lymph
- Lymph capillaries
- Lymphatic vessels (larger than capillaries)
- Lymph nodes
- Tonsils, thymus and spleen

Function of the lymphatic system
A
- Drain away excess fluid in the tissue back into the blood
- Cells in the lymph nodes remove bacteria and foreign substances
- Cells in tonsils, thymus and spleen are involved in immune responses

Movement of lymph
A
- Concentration of skeletal muscle helps to push lymph along. No pump.
- Lymphatic vessels have valves to stop lymph flowing in the wrong direction
- Lymph is returned to the blood through the thoracic duct and right subclavian duct
