Muscular Sytem Flashcards
What are the functions of the muscular system
- producing movement
- maintenance of posture
- generating heat
- sorting and moving substances
How does the muscular system produce movement
- the tendon attaches to origin and insertion
- force is transmitted to skeleton via tendon
What is the origin/the insertion
Origin - tendon attaches nearest centre of the body
Insertion - tendon attaches furthest from the centre of the body
What is torque + equation
The rotation equivalent of force
Force x perpendicular distance from the pivot
- more than one torque is acting
- bet torque determines the movement
What do linger lever arms create
- increased torque
- decreased ROM
- decreased joint angular velocity
What is a concentric contraction
Muscle in tension and shortening
What is an eccentric contraction
Muscle is in tension and lengthening
E.g controlled lowering in bicep curl
What is an isometric contraction
Muscle in tension and constant length
What is the agonist
The muscles responsible for performing or controlling the movement
What is the antagonist
The muscle that could oppose the are agonists if activated
What are stabilisers
Construct to stabilise nearby joints
What are synergists
Assist in the action of the agonists (guiding muscles)
