Muscular System-Arrangement of Fascicles Flashcards
(21 cards)
What does the muscular system refer to?
skeletal muscles specifically
What do skeletal muscles consist of?
fascicles
What can the alignment of fascicles tell us about a muscle?
reveals a lot about muscles function
How many arrangements of fascicles are there?
6
Describe circular arrangment
-fascicles in concentric circles
-surround body openings
-close by contraction
Examples of circular arrangment
orbicularis oris (mouth)
orbicularis oculi (eyes)
Describe convergent arrangement
-origin of muscle is broad
-converge towards tendon of insertion
-usually triangular/fan shaped
-fibres extend from origin to insertion
Example of convergent arrangement
pectoralis major
Describe parallel arrangment
-long axis of fascicles run parallel to long axis of muscle
-fibres extend from origin to insertion
-two types: Fusiform and Strap-like
fusiform definition and example
-expanded central belly
-biceps brachii
strap definition and example
-narrow belly
-sternocleidomastoid
Describe pennate arrangement
-fascicles are short and attach obliquely to the tendon that runs whole length of muscle
-feather like appearance
-multipennate, bipennate,unipennate
multipennate definition and example
-many feathers side by side
-deltoid (forms roundness of the shoulder)
bipennate definition and example
-fascicles insert into tendon from both sides
-rectus femoris
unipennate definition and example
-fascicles insert into one side of tendon
-extensor digitorium longus muscle
What does the arrangement of fascicles influence?
-amount of movement produced when contracted (range of motion)
-amount of force (power)
How much can skeletal fibres shorten?
up to 1/3 their original length
What are the effects of having more parallel fibers to a muscles’s long axis?
-the more the muscle can shorten (giving a larger range of movement)
*usually not that powerful
What does power depend on?
total number of fibres
What arrangements have a lot of short fibres?
short bipennate and multipennate
What does more power mean for the range of movement?
less
