Articular capsule Flashcards
What do articular capsules do?
enclose the joint cavity
What makes up the articular capsule?
2 layers (fibrous capsule and synovial membrane)
-patella, ligaments, menisci, bursae
Where is the fibrous capsule?
outer layer
continuous with the periosteum
What makes up the fibrous capsule?
dense irregular CT: rich in collagen
What is the function of the fibrous capsule?
strengthens the joint so bones are not pulled apart
Is the fibrous capsule flexible?
yes, very
Where is the synovial membrane?
-inner layer
-lining of the capsule and all internal joint surfaces not covered by cartilage
What are the 2 layers of the articular capsule?
fibrous capsule
synovial membrane
What is the synovial membrane made up of?
areolar CT with elastic fibres
What is the function of the synovial membrane?
makes synovial fluid
What are three functions of the synovial fluid?
-filtrate from blood + glycoproteins from the synovial membrane
-lubrication of joint
-exchange of nutrient and waste with articular cartilage
What does immobility do to the synovial fluid?
thickens it causing joint stiffness
