Effects of Aging Flashcards
What are 4 effects of aging?
-reduced fibre diameter
-muscles become smaller and less elastic
-tolerance for exercise is reduced
-reduced ability to heal
What does reduced metabolism lead to?
reduced strength and endurance
What does reduced fibre diameter lead to?
increased fatigue
*cardiac muscle also slows down therefore blood flow cannot compensate
What is fibrosis?
increased fibrous CT replaces space previously occupied by fibres
Why is tolerance for exercise reduced?
-reduced metabolism
-reduced capacity to eliminate the heat generated during exercise
Why is there a reduction in the ability to heal?
-damaged tissue is not replaced by new muscle but replaced with fibrous CT
myopathy
-any disorder related to muscles
muscular dystrophies
-muscle fibers degenerate
-mostly inherited
myofascial pain syndrome
-pain caused fascial constriction around a muscle
-twitch when touch the skin
strains
-injuries to tendons and muscles
shin splints
tibial periosteum becomes inflamed because muscles cannot tolerate increased activity
tenosynovitis
-inflammation of tendon sheaths and synovial membranes
Tetanus & Botox (Clostridium botulinum)
-tetanic contractions or total relaxation of muscles
