Joints-general Flashcards
What is a joint?
point of contact between 2 surfaces where a degree of movement is allowed
What are two ways joints are classified?
structurally and functionally
What are the weakest points in the skeleton?
joints (but their structure enables them to resist crushing, tearing, and various forces)
How are joints structurally classified?
-presence or absence of a cavity between surfaces
-the type of connective tissue present in the joint
What are the 3 structural classifications?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
Synovial
How are fibrous joints described?
-no cavity
-has fibrous CT
-very little movement
How are cartilaginous joints described?
-no cavity
-bones held together by hyaline cartilage or fibrocartilage
-very little movement
How are synovial joints described?
-cavity
-has articular capsule
-ligaments
-amplitude of movement
-all are diarthroses
Which structural joints move very little?
Fibrous
Cartilaginous
How are joints functionally classified?
-according to the degree of movement allowed by a specific structure
What are the 3 of functional classifications of joints?
Synarthrosis
Amphiarthrosis
Diarthrosis
How are synarthrosis joints described?
an immovable joint (no movement allowed)
How are amphiarthrosis joints described?
a slightly movable joint
How are diarthrosis joints described?
-a freely movable joint
-its structure will determine the type of movement allowed
-all diarthroses are synovial joints
