Histological Types of Muscles Flashcards
How many types of muscles are there?
3
What are the 3 types of muscles?
skeletal
cardiac
smooth
Where is skeletal muscle tissue?
-located in skeletal muscles
-attached to the skeleton or skin by tendons
list the muscle tissue types from slowest to fasted contractions
smooth, cardiac, skeletal
What is auto-rhythmicity?
-due to pacemaker cells that generate action potentials spontaneously
-pace and amount of tension can be adjusted by the nervous system
Which muscle tissues have auto-rhythmicity?
cardiac
sometimes smooth (like the walls of GIT)
Which muscle tissues are striated?
skeletal and cardiac
Which muscle tissues are voluntary?
skeletal only
Does skeletal muscle tissue have rhythmicity?
No, but over time muscles can “remember” movements (muscle memory)
Where is cardiac muscle tissue found?
Heart wall only
*makes up the majority of heart tissue
What are cardiac muscle tissue cells called?
cardiocytes
What is a microscopic identifying feature of cardiac muscle?
intercalated discs
What do intercalated discs do?
connect individual heart muscle cells
What causes cardiac muscle tissue to contract?
neural stimulation
Where is smooth muscle tissue found?
-walls of hollow internal structures
-blood vessels, gastro-intestinal tract
