Accessory ligaments & Articular discs Flashcards
capsular
thickened parts of fibrous capsule itself
Where are the intracapsular ligaments?
part of and internal to capsule but excluded from the cavity by the synovial membrane
What are some examples of intracapsular ligaments?
ant. cruciate ligament of knee
post. cruciate ligament of knee
Where are the extracapsular ligaments?
-not part of the capule
-attached to the periosteum
What are some examples of extracapsular ligaments?
fibular collateral ligament of knee
tibial collateral ligament of knee
What are articular discs made of?
fibrocartilage
What are some examples of where fibrocartilage discs can be found?
-incomplete discs in knee
-complete disc in the temporomandibular joint
-sternoclavicular joint
What is the menisus/i?
an incomplete disc in the knee
Where are articular discs?
divide synovial cavity-extends internally from capsule
What are 4 functions of articular discs?
-improve surface fitting (fills gaps-distributing load)
-absorbs compression forces
-allows independent movement in the two spaces
-directs flow of synovial fluid
How are articular discs injured?
by twisting
What is a common articular disc injury and how is it fixed?
-tear
-does not heal naturally and patients often continue to be symptomatic
What is a procedure used to diagnose or treat conditions within the knee?
arthroscopy
