muscular strength & power Flashcards
why is submax tests more relaiable than maximal?
submax reliable over days because maximal depends on how the person feels that day could change the results of a max tect
what are some pre-test considerations for muscular strength tests?
- resting BP
- warm-up all muscles since max lifts require the use of majority of the muscles
- check BP after lift to see any changes and compare to resting BP
- previous injuries
what are some maximum strength tests?
1) hand grip dynamometry
2) 1 repetition max bench press
3) 1 repetition max leg press
4) 1 repetition max back squat
why would we do sub-maximal tests?
- safer due to the reduced loads on the subject
- more reliable across days because maximal tests depends on motivation of the athlete on the particular day
- uses equations or charts to estimate maximal strength
when would you select a sub-maximal test opposed to a maximal test?
if the client is unable to do a maximal test/it is unsafe or not a goal to lift heavy. ex: senior fitness would not require 1RM
what are some sub-maximal tests?
1) bench press
2) leg press
3) back squat
explain if there is a discrepancy between left/right hands for grip dynamometry
plays sports that are one arm dominant (ex: tennis)
describe why someone would do well on grip strength but poor on bench and squat
uses different muscles for each test
describe why someone would do excellent on the leg press but poor on squat
no need to stabilize on leg press as much as on squat
why would someone’s maximal strength be lower on re-test day?
- lack of motivation
- poor warm-up
what is the formula for muscular power?
strength x speed = power
what are some ways to assess muscular power?
1) vertical jump height
2) calculated leg power
3) standing long jump
4) margaria-kalamen step test
5) smith machine power press
how do we record the time for the margaira-kalamen step test?
record time from contact on stair 3 until contact on stair 9
why would you use the smith machine for a power press?
it is much safer
explain someone who scored excellent in maximal strength, but performed poorly in muscular power tests
because they focused too much on slow maximum movements
