Muscles to Memorize (Upper) Flashcards
Brachialis and Brachioradialis
Both originate at distal humerus, brachialis inserts into radial styloid process and brachioradialis inserts into coronoid process of ulna. They flex elbow and brachioradialis supinates also.
Biceps Brachii
Originates at coronoid process and glenoid cavity
Inserts radial tuberosity
Action flex elbow/shoulder, supinate
Triceps Brachii
Origin scapula/humerus shaft
Insert olecranon process of ulna
Action extend elbow, adduct shoulder
Biceps brachii synergists
At shoulder: pec major, coracobrachialis
At elbow: pronator teres, brachialis, brachioradialis
Subscapularis
(Rotator Cuff)
Origin subscapular fossa
Insert humerus lesser tubercle
Action rotate arm laterally
Biceps brachii antagonists
At shoulder: latissimus dorsi
At elbow: triceps brachii
Latissimus Dorsi
Origin Thoracic/lumbar vert, iliac crest
Insert Humerus Intertubercular groove
Action Extend/Adduce arms
Deltoid
Origin clavicle/acromion process/scapula spine
Insert Humerus deltoid tuberosity
Action Rotation/Abduction
Supraspinatus/Infraspinatus
(Rotator Cuff)
Originate at the supraspinous/infraspinous fossa of scapula
Insert Humerus greater tubercle
Action Both rotate laterally, supra also abducts
Teres Minor
(Rotator Cuff)
Origin Scapula inferior angle
Insert Intertubercular sulcus
Action Adduct, medial rotation
Serratus Anterior Action
Pull scap upward, glenoid cavity upward
Rhomboids
Origin: thoracic vert
Insertion: scap medial border
Action: Abduction/medial rotation of scapula
Pectoralis Minor Action
Pull scap forward, glenoid cavity down
Trapezius Action
Elevate scapula, extend neck
Radioulnar Muscle Actions
Flexor Digitorum/Extensor Digitorum
Flexor Carpi Ulnaris/Extensor Carpi Ulnaris also Adduct/Abduct
Palmaris Longus flexes
Flexor Carpi Radialis/Extensor Carpi Radialis also Abducts
